Come June 2nd, the CFDA is going to make official what everyone has known for years – Rihanna is a fashion icon. For real.
The Council for Fashion Designers of America which is the official governing body for fashion designers in the United States, will recognise Rihanna at the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards which are going to be held at Lincoln Centre.
CFDA CEO Steven Kolb said the Barbadian pop star is receiving the award because of “her impact on the industry as fashion’s most exciting ambassador in recent memory.”
Big praise and she’s in some major company with previous winners including Kate Moss, Iman, Sarah Jessica Parker and Lady Gaga. Not only that, it’s clear the CFDA does not give the award lightly as a look at their archives show that it is not one of the regular annual awards. There was no icon named in 2013. And in fact, there is a gap from 2005 (when Kate Moss was honoured) until 2010 when Iman was recognised.
So kudos and definitely deserved. Even if you don’t agree with all of her fashion choices, there is no dying that Rihanna has ineffable, influential style. She is willing to take fashion risks but wears her clothing so confidently that she rarely ever comes off as a fashion victim. And by the time everyone has caught up to what she’s doing (choppy black bobs! bright red lips! sexy granny swag!), she’s on to the next fashion whimsy to have caught her fancy.
