Fashion Islandistas on the Rise

Let the fashion games begin!

Sure, the Olympics started as well but here at Islandista, we have another spectator sport on our mind – the biannual fashion season, which got started yesterday in New York City with the launch of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

As usual, we will be keeping a keen eye out for islandista models, designers and front row fillers in New York, London, Paris and Milan and looking to see what trends are coming next.

Newcomers are always exciting and this season, we will be on the look out for Jamaican teenager Kai Newman who is represented by Saint International. We mentioned her just before the start of last season, noting that she was picked as’s Model of the Week and we predicted then that she “could be the next top model from Jamaica.”

Well, we were so right!

Kai had a killer season, walking for some of the biggest, blue chip fashion names in New York, Milan and Paris. Her smouldering catwalk stare and strong, elegant face got her booked at Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Rodarte, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Jil Sander, Dries van Noten, Hermes and Miu Miu – among others!

After such a powerful debut season, she is definitely one to watch and at the end of the Spring/Summer 2014 collections, named her as one of their Top Ten Newcomers of the season, capping a huge season for the girl from Kingston’s gritty Allman’s Town.

Take a look back at some of her biggest appearances last season below. There will be more shortly, we’re very sure!
