Awards season so far: the islandista angle

This awards season has definitely been a mixed bag thus far, islandista-wise!

We’re only two awards shows in (the Golden Globes last week and the SAG Awards last night) and already there’s so much to discuss – fashion hits and misses, snubs and superb wins.

Despite starring in some of the year’s biggest movies and shows, it hasn’t been happy hunting yet for our islandistas as both Kerry Washington and Naomie Harris haven’t managed to win any awards.

Kerry lost out to House of Cards’ Robin Wright at the Golden Globes for Best Actress in a TV Series – Drama and to Dame Maggie Smith of Downton Abbey in the category of Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series at the Screen Actor’s Guild awards.

Meanwhile, despite an incandescent performance as Winnie Mandela in the Mandela biopic, Naomie Harris has barely been nominated at all, with no nominations at the Golden Globes or SAGs. She was even surprisingly snubbed at home in the BAFTAs (British Academy of Film and Theatre Awards) which caused her co-star Idris Elba to tweet:

“Ok peeps, …I’ve got an appointment at the @BAFTA I’m gonna do a #Lutherrage and ask where @NaomieHarris nomination?”

Meanwhile, island son and director Steve McQueen (whose parents are from Grenada and Trinidad) is shaping up to have a hell of a season as Twelve Years a Slave, his hellishly gripping retelling of Solomon Northrup’s memoir won the biggest award of the night at the Golden Globes last week – Best Motion Picture, Drama.

Get used to how these feel, Mr. McQueen. Word is there are a few more on the way!

If you haven’t heard about Steve McQueen, then head on over to the Guardian and check out this searing article about his upbringing in the UK. (And shout out to the island son who put me on to the article and the world onto 12 Years by bringing it to the Toronto International Film Festival aka the award season predictor, TIFF’s savvy Bajan artistic director Cameron Bailey).

And since you know we have to talk about the fashion, there has been some ups and downs there as well and a few surprises. Like Zoe Saldana’s dress for the Golden Globes, where she served as a presenter.

While we’re unapologetic Zoe fans, especially when it comes to her sense of style, this Prabal Gurung dress was… not living its best life to paraphrase Oprah. The cocktail length is always tricky for the red carpet and then it just had a number of odd affectations like the hangy, strappy bits by her shoulders and the semi-sheer panel at the bottom of the skirt. It was trying the most and didn’t quite make it.

Kerry’s pale mint Globes dress was gorgeous and an oh-so-sweet way to dress up her burgeoning baby bump as it had the cutest little fold detail by her tummy.

Her SAGs outfit on the other hand was an…interesting choice as she wore a cropped, bejewelled top by Prada and a high-waisted skirt. I’ve never seen a crop top on a (non-music) red carpet before so this was certainly a change and everyone is pretty sure we’ve never ever seen a pregnant woman rock a crop top formal outfit.

I dunno though… if she didn’t have the baby bump, would we have loved it at all? Or would it be just weird and inappropriate for the red carpet? Plus in several of the pics, you can see a bright pink line on her tummy where the skirt’s waist is clearly digging in… ouch.

And then let’s talk about Lupita Nyong’o for a minute, shall we? Not because she’s an islandista though we prayed and checked in hopes that she was the product of a Caribbean-African love story in some great metropolis. No luck yet…someone find this woman an Antiguan grandmother or something, stat!

Because her style game has been a-maz-ing thus far. Her Golden Globes outfit was one of the most perfect red carpet outfits I’ve ever seen. Every element was right from her hair (big ups to her barber! Fade was on point!) to her luminous makeup to that.dress. Yessss girl, go on and rock a cape like it’s just perfectly natural!

Red carpet perfection. #thatisall

And then she killed the SAGs on Saturday night with her bright blue dress column dress with that gorgeous flower detail. She is out to conquer this red carpet season and even though she’s not from the Caribbean, we just had to big her up because we appreciate style and ineffable swag.
