NYC principal in hot water over jouvert-type pic

Now islandistas, what does this look like to you? Makes you think of j’ouvert, Foreday morning, dutty mas, doesn’t it?

Well, while we’re not sure if the lady in this picture is a West Indian, she is in some major trouble over this photo – among other things.

She is principal Sharron Smalls of Jane Addams High School in the Bronx. Jane Addams school is…not the best to put it mildly.

She is already accused of handing students chemistry credits for cosmetology courses and geography credits for tourism classes – which, if true doesn’t help the cause of the students at the F-rated school – seniors may not be able to graduate because they lack credits in high-level math courses.

The New York Daily News reports:

Smalls has already been blasted by teachers and parents over the scandal – and now officials say she should have shown better judgment online.

Smalls wasn’t popular with students because of her strict ‘thug look is out’ dress code and when they found her pic, it got plastered all over the school. One senior Tehrra Smith complained to the NYDN:

“She doesn’t want us to come to school with short shorts and then she turns around and does this.”

Ummm… excuse me little girl? What does your desire to wear short shorts at school have to do with a grown woman partying?

While I definitely agree that Smalls was stupid to have that photo up as her profile pic, particularly knowing how kids are, I find this little girl too fass with herself. Big people business is big people business.

Of course, I’m Caribbean so seeing an adult covered in chocolate or mud or paint doesn’t seem kinky to me at all in my cultural context. But as we’ve seen before, a different cultural context can make our celebrations seem “dirty.”

smh. What are your thoughts on this islandistas? Particularly those living outside of the Caribbean, how do you balance celebrating your culture and not shocking people?

I think your right, it is non of dem business. I have to say tho that it was poor judgment for her to post it as her profile pic. tek pic all u want but post it just fi yuh frens and nuh body else. What she do on har free time is fi har fi kno n fi dem fi find out but c’mon what did they think she went home to a convent after work, she has every right to do what she want on her free time minus judgment but mouth mek fi talk, so people will always have something fi say.
