Mo’Nique made sure everyone knew the significance of her Oscar night apparel – a tribute to Hattie McDaniel, who was the first black woman to win an Oscar – 70 years ago.
Mo’Nique, who has the rights to McDaniel’s life story and hopes to play her in a movie, said in her backstage interview:
“The reason I have on this royal blue dress is that it’s the color Hattie wore in 1940 when she won this Oscar, the reason I have this flower in my hair, it’s the flower she wore when she won this Oscar. For Hattie, I feel you all over me, and it’s about time that the world feels you all over them. Thank you so much baby, I love you.”
And J-Hud, another black Oscar winner (and for Best Supporting Actress too!) wore royal blue to Elton John’s post-Oscars party – and looked just about the best we have ever seen her. Her post-baby work-out plan is working.
Interestingly enough, another Precious alum, Mariah Carey, also wore blue on Sunday night, rocking a Valentino.
Oprah said it was all a happy coincidence, noting:
And since, truly, the spirit of Hattie McDaniel was looming large last night, it felt only appropriate to end with a pic of the lady herself.
